Hey, y’all!

So, you’re excited to start gaining knowledge of the Bible, but not sure where to start? Great! I’m so glad you are here! I’m going to walk you through some resources and things I did when my fire was ignited to learn more about Jesus and The Word.

  1. Don’t Be Random

…Meaning, don’t open your Bible to a random page or book and expect to know what is going on and how to apply the message you have read each day. Instead, either start in the Gospel where Jesus is front and center (my personal favorite is the book of John), or pick a Bible study. Personally, I recommend the Seamless study by Angie Smith as a good place to start. It walks you through the entire Bible and points out how it is one complete story, start to finish, with Jesus as the central focus. I love this study so much so, I’ve done it twice!

  2. Buy a children’s Bible.

You may be thinking, “Whaaaaat…I know the children’s Bible stories, Nikita…” - and, that may be true, but the best thing about children’s bibles is the retelling of Biblical stories in a simplified format - you know, so easy a child can understand it. ;) My personal favorite is The Jesus Storybook Bible. Y’all. Whenever I read this to my son, it makes me tear up almost ever single time. It is just so sweet and it always points back to Jesus.

  3. Try Using an App Use an app on your phone.

My two favorites are The Bible app and the Logos app. The Bible app has many, if not all, of the Bible translations and many different Bible study plans that are all FREE. Plus, you can connect with friends and invite them to do studies with you. It’s an invaluable resource. The Logos app is a paid app that really digs deeper into the text, line by line. Whenever I’m studying a specific book in the Bible, this is the app I use because it’s gives cultural background information as well as information on the original translations. It’s well with the investment if you want to strengthen your knowledge.

  4. Watch it.

You may think of this as “cheating,” but I promise it’s not. My personal favorite way to “watch” the Bible is through The Chosen series. This show has done a fantastic job of showing what it was probably like to follow Jesus and be one of the chosen disciples. Sure, some of the story lines are fabricated due to the nature of The Bible not giving all details of all of their lives, however, the scenes that are based on the Biblical text have held up so far. I 10/10 recommend this show. Its also not cheesy. Sometimes when a Christian based show emerges portraying Jesus, it can be a bit cringey just due to the cheesy acting - I assure you, that is NOT the case with this show. It’s also free when you download The Chosen app.

  5. Join a study group.

I know y’all, this can be super intimidating, and it may take more than one group until you find your fit. That’s okay! I initially started Bible study when my campus held a weekly women’s Bible study night where it wasn’t a “small group” but more of a “whoever wants to show up and learn together” kind of gathering. This gave me the opportunity to meet other like minded women and some of us from that weekly gathering ended up forming a separate small group. The power of being in a small group and doing Bible studies together is you have other people to bounce ideas and questions off of. It also gives you a chance to develop relationships with women that are knowledgeable in The Word and can go to bat for you when you need prayer warriors by your side.

I hope you find these recommendations encouraging. So, what is your next step? What do you plan to do to help you grow in knowledge and relationship with the Lord? I would love to hear your plan!
