Hey y’all!

I wanted to chat today about a holistic remedy I’ve been using for a few years now. In a world inundated with synthetic remedies, there's a timeless natural solution that has stood the test of time - castor oil packs. When I first heard about castor oil packs, I totally thought people were talking about castrol motor oil, LOL! If you are anything like me, please hear me when I say, castor oil packs are do NOT use castrol motor oil…so don’t run to your nearest automotive area to stock up.

Castor oil is derived from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, and has been utilized for centuries due to its markable therapeutic properties. When applied topically in the form of packs, this golden elixir can offer a plethora of benefits to the human body. Let’s dive into five reasons why incorporating castor oil packs into your wellness routine could be a game-changer.

1. Detoxification and Liver Support

The most celebrated benefits of using castor oil packs is their potent detoxifying effect on the body, particularly in relation to the liver (this is the number one reason why I use castor oil packs ). The liver plays a pivotal role in detoxification, filtering out toxins and waste products from the bloodstream. Studies have shown that the ricinoleic acid in castor oil possesses hepatoprotective properties, which means to help shield the liver from damage (Badar et al., 2018). When applied topically over the liver area, castor oil packs stimulate lymphatic circulation and enhance liver function, aiding in the elimination of metabolic waste products.

2. Alleviating Inflammation and Pain

Chronic inflammation is a common culprit behind a myriad of health issues, from arthritis to digestive disorders. Castor oil packs have been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties, primarily attributed to the presence of ricinoleic acid and other phytochemicals. A study published in the Journal of Naturopathic Medicine demonstrated that castor oil packs applied over inflamed areas can significantly reduce pain and inflammation, making them a valuable tool in holistic pain management (Arslan et al., 2015).

3. Relieving Digestive Discomfort

For individuals who suffer with digestive woes, castor oil packs can offer welcome relief. When applied to the abdomen, the packs work by stimulating peristalsis, the muscular contractions that move food through the digestive tract. This can be particularly beneficial for those suffering from constipation or bloating. Moreover, castor oil packs may help alleviate symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) by calming inflammation and promoting regular bowel movements (Seth et al., 2012). A simple way to do this is to soak a cotton ball with castor oil and then put the cotton ball in your bellybutton as you sleep.

4. Enhancing Lymphatic Flow

The lymphatic system is a crucial component of the body's immune defense, responsible for draining waste products and toxins from the tissues. Castor oil packs help to unclog stagnant lymph nodes and improve overall immune function by improving overall circulation. By applying the packs over lymph node clusters, such as the neck and groin, you can support the body's natural detoxification process (Grzech-Leśniak et al., 2018).

5. Hair Growth

Packed with essential nutrients like vitamin E, omega-6 fatty acids, and proteins, castor oil nourishes the hair follicles, strengthening them from the roots. The ricinoleic acid in castor oil also has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which can help combat scalp infections and conditions that hinder hair growth. Additionally, castor oil improves blood circulation to the scalp, ensuring a healthy environment for hair to thrive. Regular application of castor oil can lead to thicker, longer, and more lustrous locks. To use, massage a small amount of castor oil into the scalp and distribute it through the hair, focusing on the roots. Leave it on for at least an hour before rinsing with a gentle shampoo. I personally use this shampoo and conditioner that has castor oil as an ingredient and have noticed more hair growth versus when I previously used a different brand. You can also use castor oil on your lashes and eyebrows instead of using expensive, chemical-ladden growth serums, just make sure to not get in your eyes.

How to Apply Castor Oils Packs

So, now that you know castor oil packs rock, you may be wondering how to actually put one together to use. You have a couple of options:

  1. You obviously need a high-quality, cold-pressed castor oil, preferably organic, that is stored in a glass bottle (some sources say that if it’s stored in a plastic bottle, BPAs and other endocrine disruptors may leach into the castor oil which will be counterproductive of the healing properties your are seeking) which ensures the oil's purity and effectiveness. You will also need some sort of cloth to pour the castor oil onto - some people use natural fabrics like an organic flannel or cotton cloth. You will want the cloth to be large enough to cover the targeted area, such as your abdomen or liver regions. To make the pack, fold the fabric into layers, ensuring it's large enough to cover the intended area adequately. Next, generously apply the castor oil onto the fabric. The fabric should be saturated but not dripping with castor oil. Place the oil-soaked cloth over the desired area, and cover it with a plastic wrap or a clean towel to prevent staining and to retain heat. Finally, secure the pack in place with a wrap or bandage. For added comfort and warmth, consider placing a heating pad or hot water bottle over the pack. It's recommended to leave the pack on for 30 minutes to an hour, allowing the skin to absorb the oil's beneficial properties. It’s pretty simple. Beware though - castor oil can be a little messy and if it soaks through your fabric it can stain your clothes…make sure to wear something you don’t mind getting oil stained.

  2. While everything mentioned above is simple enough, I do my packs slightly different. I personally use the Queen of Thrones castor oil packs and Queen of Thrones castor oil because it checks all the boxes that I find important. First of all, the castor oil is high quality and is stored in an amber glass bottle. Second, the packs are so simple to use and help keep the process mostly mess free. The fabric that you use to soak up the oil and rest on your skin is made of organic cotton - the backside is made of polypropylene which creates a no-mess layer which helps prevent soak-through-stained-clothes, and it has elastic bands so you can tie it around yourself. The pack also traps in body heat, eliminating the need to break out your heating pad. If you think the kit is the way to go, you can find it here. Another cool thing about Queen of Thrones, is they have recently dropped different packs that can go in various parts of the body - for example, this smaller pack is perfect to go around your throat to help thyroid health. They even have some that can be secured to your bra to help give your breasts castor oil support. I will say (again), when I’m using my packs, I always put on an old t-shirt or old pajamas just to prevent any good clothes from getting oil stained, however, I haven’t had any stained clothes since using the Queen of Thrones pack.
